Adam’s story

Adam is supported by our Home Learning team. His mother shares how the service has helped her son’s development.

My son, Adam, has significant autism difficulties with language, communication and social interaction. He has a global development delay and a possible diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. I moved to Westminster with my family last year and met the Kids Home Learning team, who have helped us tremendously.

The Home Learning team helped us settle into our new home, kept us in touch with other education services, found a nursery for my son, organised family day trips, invited us to events and gave us information updates. They helped Adam achieve countless goals, from improvement in behavioural and social difficulties to toilet training. All of the goals set out for him were completed within 4 to 6 months with the help of the home learning practitioner and myself.

I am so pleased with my son and all the progress he has made. He is now more vocal than ever before, and can use language appropriately. He has bonded more strongly with his father, his siblings and me, and he now laughs, smiles and uses eye contact when playing games with us. I never thought he would be able to achieve these goals, like walking without a pram and using public transport, so quickly.

“In addition to the improvement in Adam , I have also learnt a lot from this experience. I am now more in control of managing his behaviour and have a better knowledge of autism and understanding of my child.”

I hope he continues to make progress in the future. Being supported by Kids has been such an effective and amazing life-changing experience for me and my little boy. I have created wonderful memories that wouldn’t have been possible without Kids help. I really appreciate all the support I’ve had and hope that the Kids Westminster home learning service can continue to reach wider communities.
