Hamza is three years old and attends the Kids Family Group in Birmingham. His mum, Qudsia, shares how they have both benefited from our service.
Hamza is three years old and is awaiting an assessment from the CDC. He has been attending the Kids Family Group since April 2023.
We started using this service after our Health Visitor referred Hamza. They were concerned about Hamza’s development and thought the group would help him build his social skills, while giving me a better understanding of special educational needs and disabilities.
Before attending the Family Group, Hamza enjoyed playing on his own and allowed others near him on his own terms – though he hated messy play. Now he has become a lot more vocal and is really sociable with others in the family or with unknown adults. Hamza is happy to explore sensory messy activities and most of the time ends up in the trays! In general he seems to be more relaxed in different and unfamiliar places.
During the first session I was so anxious and worried in case Hamza had a meltdown, but now it’s the complete opposite. I love the sessions and talking to other parents; everyone is so friendly and welcoming! As the session is informal and relaxed, myself, Hamza and my sister look forward to it every week.
Thanks to the Family group sessions, I’ve had the confidence to put Hamza down for nursery in September. We hope that he continues to develop his speech and build on this new found confidence and love for messy play.
We’re on the side of two million children and young people with disabilities and special educational needs and their families. With your help we can create life-changing opportunities for children like Hamza.
