Autism in Schools is a National Project that aims to improve support for autistic children and young people in mainstream schools. It focuses on improving the school environment, fostering good relationships between staff, parents and students, signposting families to sources of support, and providing better access to early intervention. The project launched in Sheffield in October 2021 and will run until March 2025.
A total of 14 mainstream secondary schools are currently taking part. From April 2024, we will be including more schools, including Primary schools, some more Secondary schools and Post 16 Providers.
Sheffield Parent Carer Forum facilitates the parent carer groups, and Kids facilitates the children and young people’s group sessions in school following the ‘Understanding Me’ Programme. Kids also holds the ‘Understanding Me Train the Trainer’ workshops for school staff to facilitate their own children and young people’s sessions.
This is a project Commissioned by South Yorkshire ICB, working in partnership with local Sheffield Secondary Schools and with the Sheffield Parent Carer Forum.
